The Effects of asa (morning) yoga for elementary school children’s mental and physical health

Abstract

In recent years, children’s physical strength is continue to decreasing in Japan. Kitakyushu City has a higher percentage of children with emotional disorder such as Autism spectrum disorder and  Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder enrolled in regular classes than other prefectures. Hence, transition of school entry consultation continues to increase every year. In order to resolve these present state, it is necessary to development new intervention method that enhances children’s mental and physical health. Yoga is a body-mind approach, and it focuses on the relationships between the brain, mind, body, and behavior, and their effects on health and disease. Yoga is constructed through the practice of asana (postures), breathing techniques, and meditation.
We had examined the effects of asa (morning) yoga for children’s mental and physical health. Intervention consisted of one year weekly 15-min sessions. 400 elementary school childrens were participated in this study. As results, the effects of asa yoga for children’s mental health, there  was significantly improved in difficulty of self regulation in post intervention compared to pre intervention. And, difficulty of motivated behavior was also significantly improved in post intervention compared to pre intervention. The effects of asa yoga for children’s physical health, there was also significantly reduction in number of visits to the school infirmary due to lacerations in post intervention compared to baseline. Based on these evidences, our asa yoga program is one of the beneficial intervention method for elementary school children’s mental and physical health is suggested.

Biography

Shoichi Shiota earned a B.A. in Education from Kagawa University in 2009, followed by an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Tokushima University in 2013. In 2017, he completed a Ph.D. in Medical Science at Hiroshima University. Currently, he serves as an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Social Welfare, at Aomori University of Health and Welfare.
