Presentation Title:

Multimedia features in electronic book for promoting literacy among students with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Abstract

ADHD, is diagnosed in 3-10% of the population. Students with ADHD show lower performance in literacy, especially reading and reading comprehension. Thus, it is important to find tools for improving their literacy skills.  In this spirit the current study focuses on using e-books to promote literacy for students with ADHD.  E-books are digital versions of printed books integrating multimedia features. The effect of activity with e-books among students with ADHD has not studied yet. The current study has two main goals: evaluating the effect of activity with an e-book on literacy among students with and without ADHD symptoms and assessing the contribution of multimedia features integrated in e-books to participants' literacy. The participants were 128 second grade students, with and without ADHD symptoms. The participants took literacy tests, then were divided randomly into three groups of exposure: highlighted text and narrator; highlighted text, narrator and dictionary and a control group with a static book. After three exposures, literacy tests were held again, followed by comprehension test. Our findings indicate literacy improvement in all interventions groups with e-books. Other findings and discussion will be presented at the conference.
