Presentation Title:

Simulation of hearing loss in children - causes, diagnostics, solutions

Abstract

The causes of "hearing loss that does not exist" are simulation of deafness, conversion hearing loss, and imitation of an adult who is authoritative for the child. An analysis of children admitted to our hospital with a referral diagnosis of "sudden sensorineural hearing loss" showed that 60% of children had normal hearing. Many doctors believe that children are not prone to simulation at all, which is a big mistake that leads not only to unnecessary treatment and misleading the child's parents, but also to disappointment in the possibilities of medical restoration of hearing in many cases of truly sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Among the reasons that make a child declare sudden unilateral deafness, the leading one is the divorce of parents.  The clinical and audiological picture is characterized by normal data from objective and contradictory data from subjective methods of hearing assessment. The line between these states is quite thin and is a reason for consultations with a psychiatrist and psychologist.
