The significance of poor educational outcomes in early childhood as a result of child abuse and neglect

Abstract

Child neglect is often underreported but has devastating effects. Abuse and neglect can be evaluated in four types of unresponsive care: occasional inattention, chronic under-stimulation, severe neglect in the family context, and severe neglect in an institutional setting. Children and youth are impacted differently by evaluating the severity of the trauma and the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). This presentation dives into the impact abuse and neglect have on a child’s brain development,  family involvement, educational outcomes, developmental milestones and future outcomes including transition to adolescence, adulthood, early marriage and employment. There is an African central point however a global perspective and research are included in this study and presentation. 

Biography

Afia  Kyei is originally from Ghana. She is an Author of Intech Open, an active member of the Council of Exceptional Children (Ontario and the US). She sits on a some divisions. She is a graduate student in the Autism and Behavioural Science program (Sept 2024-2025) at George Brown College, Toronto. Afia holds a  Bachelor’s degree (Honours) in Early Learning and Community Development with a minor in French as a second language at Algonquin College ( Ottawa, Ontario).  She also has a degree in child and youth care from Fanshawe College, Ontario. Afia aims to focus on analyzing behaviours within the Autism Spectrum Disorder. She has worked in various settings in complex needs while studying. Out of school, she enjoys playing the guitar with children and adolescents.
